2023 EU Green Week IFLA Europe event ‘Landscape Architecture and the EU Green Deal’, Thursday, 8 June 2023 at 14h CET
IFLA EUROPE is participating as partner in EU Green Week events with the objective to encourage individuals, communities and organisations to take stronger action in future – to protect, preserve and restore our landscape and environment. Urban, agrarian and rural, coastal and natural landscapes require, today more than ever, adequate protection, planning and management, as stated in the European Landscape Convention in 2000. The Paris Agreement and the United Nations 2030 Agenda outlined a clear roadmap to curb climate change. Mitigation and adaptation specify measures to reduce greenhouse gases, on the one hand, and to adapt our environment to new climate scenarios, on the other.
IFLA EUROPE as one of five regions of IFLA (International Federation of Landscape Architects) aims to contribute to the celebration of the 75th IFLA anniversary and to present through this event the future of the profession and its importance to landscape protection and nature conservation. Nowadays, Landscape Architects seek to find new ways to ensure sustainability through the valuation of nature and ecosystem services, to provide qualitative and healthy landscapes, as well as preserving collective memory, heritage and culture, and creating places that anticipate social and economic well-being.
The theme of our online webinar “Landscape Architecture and the European Green Deal”, aims to present the valuable and crucial role of Landscape Architecture to respond to European Green Deal challenges. Also to present the new trends towards, -from rural to urban landscapes-, biodiversity recognition, as a source for sustainable economy and development, nature-based solutions, climate change mitigation measures, agricultural policies, to enhance economic and environmental resilience. We need to promote landscape and nature in decision-making, developing a holistic vision regarding cultural, social, political, environmental, and economic balance beyond political borders. Landscape resilience is key to maintaining biodiversity, and landscape architects face two key problems in European landscapes. The key challenge in urban areas is the shrinking of green spaces in competition for land, and the main problem in rural areas is the abandonment of traditional cultivation and intensification of agriculture.
