IFLA Europe Exhibition 'Re-considering Nature' project

‘Educational Pavillion with recreational clearing of Vistula river banks’ - Poland

Today we present a project from SAK Poland entitled ‘Educational Pavillion with recreational clearing of Vistula river banks’

This project was selected in the competition. It aimed at creating a place for sharing knowledge on surrounding nature in the form of Nature 2000 project. The object and the educational clearing represents a formal interpretation of the phenomenon of migration in nature. The pavilion was inspired by a postglacial rock and it resembles the presence of the glacier migrating in these areas and shaping the landscape of the Vistula valley. The clearing refers to the shape of river shoals and materials migrating there. The project educates about nature and carries the idea of an ecological building. The pavilion does not interfere with the terrain; it is founded on a slab, thus not changing the soil structure and water conditions. It protects against noise from the nearby railway line and stabilizes the temperature in the facility. The paths and all hardened surfaces are permeable. The concept was built in the existing greenery. Trees were not removed while ecological corridors were strengthened with shrubs and biodiversity was enhanced. The project is a response to the contemporary search for a design formula in a landscape of high spatial and natural values. It is a place for education sunken in nature and inspired by it. It is intended for the local community and educational organizations. It is space for meetings and dialogues about nature.

The aim of the exhibition is to show the contemporary role of landscape architects in creating space together with nature. Its conventionally perceived task - to create and preserve beauty in the surrounding of human habitations - has expanded considerably. Environmental challenges, climate change and the living conditions of the inhabitants of larger and larger cities oblige us to take nature beyond the emphasis on aesthetic perspectives. In design, planning and management of landscapes, landscape architects face a contemporary challenge: thinking of nature as a subject, understanding its principles and respecting its needs.

IFLA Europe exhibition presents projects conceived and created in close connection with the nature. It includes large and small-scale implemented landscape architecture projects showing the forces of nature as well as exposing nature’s rights, role and importance. IFLA Europe exhibition presents an overview of realised landscape architecture projects from all over Europe which are implemented in harmony with the nature and using nature-based solutions. Implemented projects show work of landscape architects working either individually or in multidisciplinary teams. Realised projects promote environmental as well as aesthetic value.
