On Thursday 1st September 2022 we are hosting a display of the Ian McHarg Exhibition loaned to us from the Landscape Institute Scottish Chapter (plus a drink reception), in 2 Royal Avenue, Belfast (The former Tesco shop has now been transformed into an exhibition space) between 5.30-7.30pm. We hope you can drop in on your way home from work for an hour, or travel to the venue to engage and learn and to meet with fellow landscape architects!

Ian L. McHarg (20 November 1920 – 5 March 2001) was a Scottish landscape architect and writer on regional planning using natural systems. McHarg was one of the most influential persons in the environmental movement who brought environmental concerns into broad public awareness and ecological planning methods into the mainstream of landscape architecture, city planning and public policy. He was the founder of the department of landscape architecture at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States.

Ian McHarg’s seminal text ‘Design with Nature’ had a huge impact on the profession of landscape architecture, shifting its focus from an aesthetic basis towards a large-scale ecological approach. The text also had a great influence on the wider associated professions of planning and ecology and led to the development of landscape urbanism, an approach that underpins many contemporary design practices. Through this celebration and exhibition the ILI hope to raise awareness of McHarg, his worldwide positive influence and place within the wider narrative of the environmental tradition. It will also examine how subsequent students went on to continue to design with nature through current practice and inspire the profession into the twenty-first century.

The exhibition material has been collated into a richly illustrated display divided across three themes:

  • Environmentalism and McHarg’s early teaching in Scotland
  • McHarg’s Scottish Students
  • Students of David Skinner
